rocky mouth waterfall

We decided to hit another waterfall on our last weekend of summer vacation. We went to Rocky Mouth in Sandy, and it was even cooler than we thought it would be. And being close by is always a plus.  The funny thing about this waterfall is that you park at the bottom of a neighborhood and then walk up the street to find the trailhead- nestled right in between two houses. How cool would that be, to have this hidden waterfall-- the whole mountain actually-- right behind your house?! I'm totally jealous.
So, first you park in this little parking area off of Wasatch Blvd- (complete directions below.)
These stairs take you up to the neighborhood. I loved these stairs and think they would be super cool for a family picture or something.

You can see the neighborhood coming into view.

Once in the neighborhood you count around six or seven houses on your right until you come to this sign and tiny opening in the fence. (Of course they're huge houses so it's a little walk. Our boys actually stopped at one of the house's front yard water features and asked if this was our destination...) We didn't quite know what we were looking for and thought we'd passed it, so I'm making it easy on you with a picture!

More cool stairs. It's a steep and rocky trail- but even a 2-year-old can
make this hike with a firm hand-hold. And it's only about one mile round trip.
The steep trail.

Steep and rocky!
Some amazing views of the valley though.

Getting closer to the stream and the green.

There are a couple caves to discover-- they just go in a little bit.

There were massive rocks to play on too.
another cool cave

The kid is a mountain goat. I need to get him in climbing
lessons or something... or maybe just keep hiking with him.
Our first view of the falls!
There were a couple girls swimming in the falls and a family
with lots of kids, so while they played, we climbed and had a picnic.

Oh- and took some nature shots.

ledge eaters
We were excited to find a new Jimmy John's in Draper- right on the way up- yum!

Finally we had the falls to ourselves! So fun!
It was such a hot day- in the 90's- so the spray felt great!
Looking back from the falls.

Ollie was just staring at the top for so long while he nibbled his sandwich.
Of course Elliott was first to attempt the slippery rocks to the next ledge.
Ollie tried to hand me his sandwich to hold and I made him put it in his pocket! Hahaha!

The rocks are slippery- so BE CAREFUL! But really they aren't that bad.

We were getting soaked! Why didn't we wear our swimsuits?
Elliott's face! Of course the water was FREEZING.
If Ollie isn't my kid...

Why is getting down always more treacherous than up?

I had to wedge Linc behind my leg until Adam could help him down.
I heart helping pictures. They make me so happy.

Warming back up in a hot patch of sun.
The water was so clean and clear- you can hardly tell these rocks were submerged in water.

Rocky Mouth is a fitting name, I think.

I love a plant growing out of a rock!

This is what the riverbed looked like under the bigger rocks...
someone (mother nature?) had slathered a little bit on a
big rock on the side. We inspected it for a while. Pretty huh?

This side must get more sun- it was covered in plants. See the pretty clear water below?

Last view of the falls. Pictures don't do justice. You'll have to go for yourselves.
Lincoln is so delighted every time he finds a buggy friend to crawl up his arm... yikes!

Taking it all in before our descent.
Linc's turning into quite the climber too.

Surprisingly- after all that climbing, Elliott tripped on the most level part of the trail and scraped his knee and elbow pretty bad. Good thing we keep wipes and bandaids in the pack. (And by we, I mean me.)

It was a fun little hike-- I'm so glad I know it's there.
I love finding all these hidden treasures around our amazing state!

ROCKY MOUTH

1 mile round trip

Directions to trailhead:

At the intersection of 9400 S. & Wasatch Blvd, continue south 3 more miles on Wasatch Blvd. Watch for an LDS church on the right. Park just south of this church on the East side of the road. (It's about 11300 S.)

OR

We came from 12300 S. in Draper and headed East until we hit Wasatch Blvd. Then continued North until the parking lot at 11300 S. which is just South of the church.

Walk up the wooden stairs to the neighborhood. Continue uphill to the right past six or seven houses on the right until you reach the catwalk between two houses. It's on the East side near the mountain.

I found the directions on this blog- check it out! She's been to lots of waterfalls in Utah!
